When out feeding the cows on the Kale and Swede crop, Shayne found a tiny soaking wet kitten at night. So he brought her home and I was supposed to rehome her.....which of course never happened and Pearl has been added to the family. She was given a flea and worm treatment immediately and has since been de-sexed.
Unfortunately wild cats are quite prevalent in the countryside and they are fantastic for keeping rats, mice and the rabbit population down. Rats can a real problem on a farm, especially when you have so much grain and animal feed to store as most of it comes in 20kg bags. Keeping feed bags in large bins with lids help and our automatic chicken feeder has a lid that pops up when the chickens stand on the platform.
We do have larger grown cats that live in our hay barns and in cold winters I put out food daily for them to help get them through a harder winter. They do such a fantastic job of pest control in the warmer months, its a great trade to be honest.
