Walking our ladies to the shed to be milked.....

windvalefarm

How you walk your cows to the cowshed is called cow flow and its very important that they arrive calmly and quietly and stress free. This prevents lameness caused by rushing them and a stressed cow can be more prone to mastitis (an infection in the udder that needs to be treated and this milk cant go into the milk vat for collection) We always let them walk along quietly at their own pace.

A nice calm well fed cow will arrive relaxed and happy at the cowshed and will let all her milk down in her udder through a naturally occurring hormone called Oxytocin. We milk our ladies once a day and start milking around 7am each morning, then they have the rest of the day to themselves to eat and relax on a completely grass based system with a low stocking rate.
