Weekly farm life is and can be quite varied, currently we are getting ready for a shed inspection which generally takes two hours of time to go through all the necessary paperwork to show we are performing to a top level for our milk supplier. This is essential to show we are looking after our cows well and producing a high quality, grass fed product with happy cows.
The happier the cow is the more she relaxes and naturally lets the milk down in her udder, of course being well fed and meeting all her nutritional requirements are also important factors.
We milk our cows once a day in the mornings and leave them to relax and enjoy the rest of the day and they are always outside on pasture and in winter we supplement them with Kale and Suede crop and Silage (which is long grass cut and stored wrapped to allow the sugars to slightly ferment the grass and gives a higher calorie food for the cows when the natural grass in the paddocks slows in growth over winter)
With a shed inspection we always paint to freshen the cow shed and this year we painted the complete exterior and interior. Having a clean environment when collecting the milk is very important because its a food product and hygiene is always key. Last year we achieved a commendation for our shed inspection and this year we hope to achieve the same or higher.
